
An initiative aimed at promoting Sikhs and Punjabis, amplifying their voices globally, and celebrating their achievements was founded by the late Sardar Jagmohan Singh, who served as the first Secretary General. He was also the pioneer behind the Shiromani Institute, which introduced the first-ever awards honoring Sikhs and Punjabis in 1977.

Shiromani Institute gala in 1987, in London had the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher, as the chief guest, and in India President of India, Giani Zail Singh; Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh; Air Chief Marshal Arjan Singh and many more have graced the occasion as chief guest and supported Shiromani Institute.
Since its inception, the Society has honored distinguished individuals from around the globe with the prestigious Shiromani Award. Among the recipients are Narinder Singh Kapany, the father of fiber optics; legendary athlete Milkha Singh, known as 'The Flying Sikh'; CBI Director Sardar Joginder Singh; Lord Swaraj Paul; Lord Daljit Rana; Lord Suri, Lord Rami Ranger; cricket icon Bishan Singh Bedi; renowned Punjabi artists Malkit Singh, also known as the Golden Star, film legend Raj Kapoor, Veteran Journalist Khushwant Singh, Judge Mota Singh and Daler Mehndi along with many other eminent personalities from various fields across the world.
Jagmohan Singh was the son of the late Sardar Durlab Singh, a veteran journalist of his time, who published Punjabi journal Ranjit Nagara and Magazine Indian Observer.
He was one of the most renowned figures among Sikhs and Punjabis in India as Veteran Journalist and Manu Jagmohaan Singh's grandfather.
Durlab Singh was among the most esteemed and courageous journalists of his time.
